Looking Good to Feel Better

Told by Sam Svoboda…

What you wear can affect your overall mood and confidence, and because of that, it can affect the energy you exude to others.

During the first year of the pandemic I became so accustomed to the sweatpants, t-shirt, and no makeup look while working from home. I’ve never been a morning person, so when my company first announced that we were going to be working remotely, I used every last minute I could to sleep in that I otherwise would have used to pick out my outfit, do my makeup, and commute to work. At first, I loved working in sweatpants, but about a year into the pandemic, I started to feel as though I had lost a sense off routine that I once had when I worked in person. One thing I did to combat this was…well first it was to start putting on makeup again. And let me tell you, I was instantly more productive at work by doing just that first step alone. I still wanted to be comfortable when I was working at home, so I started investing in matching workout sets. At first, I questioned spending any money on clothes that no one was going to see me wear. But that made me realized that my whole life I had been dressing myself based on what others were wearing and not because they were clothes that made me feel like my truest and best self. In other words, the pandemic helped me to finally start choosing what I wanted to wear simply because I felt great in them.

My story is one of the same variation that I’ve been hearing ever since I could remember. Growing up, one of my best friends from high school would wear a skirt or a dress every day she had an exam because she said that dressing up made her feel more alert. On the other hand, another friend of mine would never wear jeans past the first day of school because she said wearing comfortable clothes made her focus better in class.

Fast forward to fall 2022. The Covid cases have lowered, and the world is healing, but the idea of dressing for ourselves can still be applied today. What you wear can affect your overall mood and confidence, and because of that, it can affect the energy you exude to others. Wearing something that makes you feel good can make even simple tasks feel more exciting, such as grocery shopping or even cleaning your home. It can also make things like going out more exciting when you’re planning to wear one of your favorite outfits. The confidence you can get from wearing an outfit that you love, whatever that may look like to you, can drastically improve the trajectory of your day and your overall mood. Some people feel their best when they aren’t wearing makeup, while others feel their best wearing sundresses just to sit at home and watch Netflix. In any case, wearing clothes that make us feel good help us to become more confident and grounded in who we are.
